Citizen of the World – Chapter 3: The Art of Stillness

For me, stillness arrived as an instant realization my old world no longer existed. From the moment she came into my life, a pure love poured into my soul. I was ready, and even grateful, to let go of the version of myself that no longer belonged.

Now, my focus is different. I live to provide her with the best resources I can not to shape her into who I think she should be, but to support her in becoming who she already is. I am constantly learning how to communicate more clearly, to listen more deeply, and to give her the space to voice her own thoughts and feelings.

For years, my life moved quickly new places, new languages, new beginnings.I grew used to constant motion, always learning how to adapt, rebuild, and start again. Movement became my natural state. But somewhere along the way, I realized I had forgotten how to simply be.

My stillness didn’t begin until my daughter was born. Her arrival brought a quiet I had never known not silence, but a deeper slowing of time. Holding her, I saw myself reflected back in ways I hadn’t before. Every breath, every small gesture, invited me to pause. She became my mirror, showing me both tenderness and truth.

Through her, I began to understand that stillness isn’t the absence of activity it’s the presence of awareness. It’s the ability to feel life as it’s happening instead of always running ahead of it.

In those early years, I learned to sit with moments instead of trying to change them.To observe before reacting. To listen more, even to my own inner voice. That was the beginning of my balance the same calm rhythm that now fills my studio.

The art of stillness is not about doing nothing; it’s about doing one thing with intention. When my hands move in creation shaping a nail, blending pigment, or simply cleaning a brush I feel that same quiet my daughter once brought into the room.

Stillness taught me that peace isn’t found in escaping life; it’s found in living it more slowly, more fully. It’s in the breath between actions the space where meaning has time to appear.

After years of movement, this was my lesson:You can cross continents searching for belonging, but sometimes, the journey ends when a child looks into your eyes and you finally see yourself.

Closing Reflection

Motherhood anchored me in the present.

Through her eyes, I saw what I had been searching for across the world stillness, love, and a quiet kind of truth.
